Gaming the System Gaming the System

Some of the most fun I’ve had with video games has been when I’m doing something the game doesn’t want me to do — whether it’s going beyond a map boundary or killing enemies in an unconventional way. Here are a few ways I’ve subverted developer expectations and done things my own way.

A Retrospective: Why 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' Deserves to Be Known As One of the Good Star Trek Films A Retrospective: Why 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock' Deserves to Be Known As One of the Good Star Trek Films

I don’t feel like I should put a spoiler warning in the main heading for movies that are more than 30 years old, but I will put one here. Major spoilers ahead for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

The Loot Box Problem and Why Rocket League Should Be Rated "Adults Only" The Loot Box Problem and Why Rocket League Should Be Rated "Adults Only"

A “loot box” in video game terminology is a randomized chance at receiving one or more virtual items in a video game (often by opening a virtual “box” of some sort).

Luke Skywalker Can Be SAVED In Episode IX (SPOILERS for The Last Jedi and the original Star Wars trilogy) Luke Skywalker Can Be SAVED In Episode IX (SPOILERS for The Last Jedi and the original Star Wars trilogy)

Star Wars: The Last Jedi had some problems. In my last article, I talked about plausible solutions in Episode IX for three of those problems. But there was one other problem that I thought was simply a lost cause. I barely mentioned it because I thought it was something that could not be fixed. I was wrong.

How to Fix Three Major Problems in The Last Jedi (SPOILERS) How to Fix Three Major Problems in The Last Jedi (SPOILERS)

I enjoyed Star Wars: The Last Jedi for its spectacle, but I could see problems with its story.

Until Dawn's Main Cast of Characters, Ranked (Major Spoilers) Until Dawn's Main Cast of Characters, Ranked (Major Spoilers)

I’m leaving the old man out of this since we barely got to know him. I’m also leaving out Hannah, Beth, and Dr. Hill for reasons that are spoilers* if you haven’t played the game (or watched videos of it). Speaking of spoilers, this post is going to be full of them. Read at your own risk.

Let's [Watch Other Gamers] Play Let's [Watch Other Gamers] Play

Let’s Play videos — videos that feature gamers commenting on and reacting to video games as they play them — have become a pretty big thing over the past few years, with certain “YouTubers” even being able to earn a living through the advertising revenue their videos can generate. If I may, I’d like to take a quick…

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U: A Retrospective Super Smash Bros. for Wii U: A Retrospective

I had never owned a Smash game before the Wii U incarnation, so I didn’t really know what to make of all the popularity surrounding the franchise. I was curious about the game, but I was also disinterested enough to wait for a sale. A few months ago, walmart.com gave me the sale I had been looking for, so I went ahead…

Have We Just Heard The Wii U's Death Knell?

As a Wii U owner, I was really looking forward to this year’s E3 Nintendo Direct. With Zelda Wii U pushed to 2016, Nintendo needed a big, unexpected reveal like a Wii U Metroid game or a Wii U F-Zero game to wow their fans and get them excited about the future of Wii U gaming. Instead, we were treated to a…

The Forgotten The Forgotten

TV shows, movies, video games, books... a lot of stories come and go each year, some with more lasting notoriety than others.

Shovels at the ready!

The long-awaited Shovel Knight finally — for real this time — has a North American release date for Wii U and 3DS (eShop only): June 26, 2014. This game promises to have retro-inspired platforming action in spades. Can you dig it?

Moon Chronicles, Episode 1 - One Small Step: A TAY Review Moon Chronicles, Episode 1 - One Small Step: A TAY Review

When a few of his fellow soldiers go missing inside an underground facility on the moon known as a "hatch," Major Kane navigates the mysterious and often dangerous corridors to find them — and to uncover the mysteries surrounding this strange subterranean complex.

When They Were Great When They Were Great

Last night, I decided on a whim to start watching my favorite Star Trek: Voyager episode on Netflix. Now, Voyager isn't what I consider a great sci-fi series, or even a great Star Trek series. It's fine, but its premise (being lost tens of thousands of light years from home) is generally wasted. Throughout most of the…

I finished Mass Effect 3's Citadel DLC and, well, it was... nice. I mean, it wasn't bad. It had some decent action, and the character interactions were good to see. It was clearly a love letter to the fans, but... that's really all it was. There was no epic adventure like we had in Lair of the Shadow Broker (still the…

Making my way through Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (on Normal difficulty), and I'm really enjoying it so far. (I'm a little bit past the second boss.)

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate (3DS) is a refreshingly forgiving experience. I'm playing through it on Normal difficulty, and I just passed the first boss battle. The boss battle was divided into different parts; and if I died, the game would merely have me start from the beginning of whichever part of…

I bought Bit.Trip Saga yesterday from the eShop, and I have to say... what's with the lack of lefty support for FATE? It's pretty much unplayable for me, which is a shame, because it looks pretty fun. The Circle Pad Pro was released months after this game first hit the 3DS, so I can understand why there's no CPP…

I'm not actually interested in getting Hulu Plus, but I have to wonder why it never came to the 3DS. I love having Netflix on my 3DS, and I think Hulu Plus could work just as well. Is it that they couldn't figure out how to integrate commercials (which no pay service should have in my opinion) into a 3DS version?
